Tonga's Win Over France The Biggest Upset Ever? 37 views 2 Comments
02 October 2011 by The Swede Eaters See all

Was the victory by Tonga over France the biggest upset in Rugby World Cup history? Scotty Donaldson looks at the issue.

Do you think the Tonga victory over France is the biggest upset of Rugby World Cup history?  There have been some major upsets at the Rugby World Cup since the first tournament in 1987, but it would be difficult to beat the victory by the 13th ranked Tonga over the 5th ranked Tonga side.  Tonga has a population of 104,000 and France 65 million people.  The crazy thing is that this result had no real affect on the tournament since Tonga were pretty much already eliminated already after losing to Canada earlier in the tournament.  Amazingly, Tonga could have won by more than the 19-14 scoreline suggests, but they probably didn't look like scoring four tries to get an extra bonus point.

There have been several other upsets.  Ireland defeated Australia at this tournament, this had greater ramifications for the play-offs, but when you consider that Ireland are ranked 6th and Australia 3rd it doesn't seem like much of an upset.

What are some other huge upsets?  Western Samoa beating Wales in 1991 and 1999 are both big upsets, while the France victories over the All Blacks in 1999 and 2007 are massive.  Argentina defeating France in the opening game of the Rugby World Cup 2007 is also huge.    What about the Fiji defeat of Wales in 2007?

Which Rugby World Cup upset is the biggest based on the difference between teams and the magnitude of the achievement?

It's up there with Fiji beating Wales in the last cup and almost as good an upset as Samoa in 1991. The Samoa result had a major effect to it, as you say this was a dead rubber. If Morath was kicking better it would have been a thrashing which would have elevated it to being a bigger upset?

I think to comment objectively you would have had to be around and following each world cup... I cant really comment on anything in 87 and 91 as 95 was the first cup iw atched. That virtually rules anyone under 35 out
