Pacific Rugby-fest in Auckland 12 views 0 Comments 19 Images
26 September 2011 by Real Deal See all

On saturday 25th of september, Eden park was packed to capacity for the crucial clash between Samoa and Fiji.  The 60,400 Samoan and Fijian fans were in good spirits, many of them just getting together to experience their small island nation competing in a mega world event. So many friends, aunties, uncles, kids, mums and dads, a big family day out.

I took along my iphone to capture what I saw, I walked to the game from Mt Eden Village (see video),  and waited for my friend at the western entrance to the stadium. It was raining which made it feel  like a regular rugby day in New Zealand.

We all wanted to see open, running rugby, but Samoa played a tight controlled match in order to stop Fiji from playing their natural style. There were big hits of course and fantastic athletic feats but Samoa were on a mission.. to win this game so that they could face South Africa with a chance to progress through to the quarters.
