After the disappointment of missing a South Africa contract for 2014, Bulls captain, Pierre Spies, is now determined to prove a point in the upcoming Super Rugby campaign.
The 28-year-old's omission from the list of seven players who have been handed deals for this year surprised fans who bet on rugby.
Having endured a lengthy spell out on the sidelines with a bicep injury, coach, Heyneke Meyer, has decided to overlook Spies for now.
The player and the Springbok coach have spoken about the lack of a deal for the talented back-rower and now it’s up to Spies to try to prove himself in the Super Rugby campaign.
There are still some deals available in the build up to the World Cup in England and Wales next year and Spies is determined to make sure his name is on one of those contracts ahead of the major tournament.
He told Sports Talk: “There are still three contracts in the system that they have to give out but more than that I have made the decision to play in South Africa for the next two years, for the Bulls and for the Springboks.”
In the meantime, Spies is eager to impress for the Bulls but has not ruled out a possible move away from South African shores in the future, with many players being linked to the Top 14 in France in the rugby betting press.
“My short-term goal is the next two years is to be here in South Africa. You never know how things might unfold in these two years and even after that. So I’ll definitely like to go out and experience a new culture.”
