Once probably the richest union in the world, the Golden Lions (formerly Transvaal) was on the provincial powerhouses in South African rugby during the late 80s and early 90s. Playing in their well-known red and white strip, the Lions won a few Currie Cup trophies as well as the inaugural Super 10 title in 1993, with their coach at that stage, the late Kitch Christie, going on to lead the Springboks to World Cup glory in 1995. Coca-Cola Park (formerly Ellis Park), the home of the Golden Lions, is one of the biggest stadiums in South Africa.
