The Six Nations, or versions of, has been at the heart of Northern Hemisphere rugby since 1883. It is the annual meeting of all the leading rugby nations fighting for supremacy at the start of each calendar year.
It originated as the 'Home Nations' series involving England, Scotland Ireland and Wales, running from 1883 - 1909. Then France joined the ranks and there was a Five Nations series each year from 1910 - 1931, bar 5 years during World War I. Come 1932 it dropped back to the Home Nations again, lasting up to 1939. Trouble once again struck with the onset of World War II, and the rugby picked up again in 1947 as the Five Nations, which lasted to the modern day of 1999. In 2000 the Six Nations was born, with Italy stepping up as a worthwhile opponent.
The competition as we know it today always gains massive following as typically at least 4 teams have a genuine chance at taking the title. These are closely fought battles and intense rivalries.
