James O’Connor looks set to be heading back Down Under in a bid to make a return to the Australia squad for next year’s World Cup after announcing he will leave London Irish at the end of the current season.
The full-back signed a six-month deal with the Exiles after having his Australian Rugby Union contract terminated following a string of off-field issues.
After racing his way to 40-plus Australia caps, the wheels began to come off for O’Connor. His off-field problems were a contributing factor behind his omission from Australia’s squad that travelled to the northern hemisphere in the autumn, and many people who bet on rugby argue a move to London appears to have been the best thing for the talented youngster.
The 23-year old has been impressive during his short spell in England, reportedly catching the eye of big-spending Heineken Cup champions, Toulon, before they signed Wales star, Leigh Halfpenny.
While many rugby betting pundits feel that O’Connor wouldn’t be short of options should he want to stay in Europe, the versatile back is expected to try and secure a return to Super Rugby for the 2015 season in a bid to improve his World Cup hopes.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at London Irish, and I am looking forward to the next few months. The club welcomed me in with open arms last year in what was a difficult time, and have been brilliant to me during my time so far.”
"I've learnt a great deal, both on and off the field, and will leave at the end of the season with great memories and mates, too,” added O’Connor.
O'Connor's departure is the second blow to London Irish in as many days, coming fresh off the back of the news that England winger, Marland Yarde, has signed a deal to join Harlequins at the end of this season.
