Will Genia is hoping to complete an incredible return to action in time for the opening fixture of the 2013 Super Rugby competition.
The 24-year-old Reds star is currently on the sidelines after undergoing a knee reconstruction, and initial fears were that Genia would remain on the road to recovery well into the start of next season.
But the resilliant Wallabies international could yet defy medical predictions and make it back in time to face the Waratahs in what promises to be a real firecracker of an opening-round tie in February or next year.
Anyone looking for rugby tips online will be pleased to hear Genia is also set to agree new terms with the ARU in October, which is excellent news for the national team and head coach Robbie Deans ahead of next year’s British and Irish Lions tour.
Fans who watch live rugby online will know that the scrum-half played an integral role in the Wallabies’ 2011 Tri-Nations success and his presence was sorely missed as Australia failed to trouble New Zealand at this year’s expanded tournament.
And Genia’s efforts at club level for the Reds in recent years have helped further enhance his reputation as one of rugby’s greatest play-makers.
He played an integral role in the Queenslanders’ Super Rugby triumph in 2011, and Reds chief executive Jim Carmichael says he can’t wait to see Genia back in competitive action.
“He's got a little bit of a spring in his one step and he's champing at the bit about coming back for our first home game against the Waratahs in February,” said Carmichael.
“If anyone can come back from that injury faster than normal it's Will, and he tells me he's a little bit ahead of schedule, so here's hoping.”
That Genia is ahead of schedule in his recovery is fantastic news for Australian Rugby, the Super Rugby competition and most certainly for the Reds, whose play-off defeat in 2012 still stings.
