Scots suffer huge setback 6 views 0 Comments 0 Images

Former Scotland skipper Andy Nicol described it as “the worst result in Scottish rugby history” and it’s hard to disagree with him, following their 21-15 defeat at the hands of Tonga at Pittodrie.

The Scots went into the game on the back of defeats to New Zealand and South Africa but there were plenty of positives to take from those encounters with the southern hemisphere powerhouses.

However there will be very little Scotland can take from their loss to the Tongans on Saturday in Aberdeen.

The Six Nations outfit were awarded 20 penalties during the game, which also saw the Pacific Islanders given three yellow cards, in what was an ill-disciplined performance from the visitors.

But will they care? Not a jot.

Scotland have taken a huge blow to their preparations for the Six Nations early next year and they will have to make vast improvements for their opening game against arch rivals England at Twickenham.

The Scots struggled to make the most of their chances to score, in a first-half they dominated but could only muster a 6-3 lead at the break.

Head coach Andy Robinson will probably have a few sleepless nights after that performance, as Scotland had so many chances to pull clear of the resilient Islanders.

Everything will have to go back to the drawing board for the Celtic outfit and at this point it’s hard to say whether they will have learned anything from the defeat.

Nicol has pulled no punches and nether should Robinson.

It was a dark day for Scottish rugby but things can only get better and a win over the Auld Enemy in February would get things back on track but this side is a long, long way from that.
