Brave Clarke leads Chiefs to Title 10 views 0 Comments 0 Images

The Chiefs went into this Super Rugby season without many giving them a chance of challenging for the title, only for the New Zealanders to defy the rugby tips online on their way to a stunning 37-6 victory against the Sharks to clinch the Super Rugby trophy.

While the fact the Chiefs romped their way to a comfortable win against the Sharks was surprising enough, having captain, Craig Clarke, in the team and playing such a crucial role in the victory was even more of an achievement.

The influential second-row sustained a knee strain in the semi-final win against the Crusaders – an injury usually resulting in at least six-weeks on the sidelines – only to patch himself up and get himself on the pitch at the Waikato Stadium. And what an impact Clarke had on the Chiefs coming away with a sensational win and the title.

The lock never looked like a player struggling with a fairly serious knee problem, putting in his usual tireless performance, taking and giving out some huge hits at the breakdown.

Chiefs head coach, Dave Rennie, admitted that his captain shouldn’t have really been on the pitch with his injury, but made it clear that he was delighted to have been able to have Clarke in the team for the biggest game of the season.

"You want players who can play with small hurts and get through games, and Craig showed that today really. He shouldn't have even stripped. We got 80 minutes out of him and that's the sort of player that I want on the track," Rennie said.

"To strap it up, get him out there […] he had to grin and bear it a bit and tough it out.”
