Former Scotland international Gavin Hastings concedes that expectations will be low going into 2013 but is confident the team can start to re-build.
Scotland lost all three autumn Tests to versus the All Blacks, South Africa and most notably Tonga.
It was the 21-15 to Tonga in Aberdeen that not only defied the Rugby Betting but proved the most damaging result, with their first ever loss to the Pacific Islanders prompting head coach Andy Robinson to resign.
They also failed to reach the knockout phase at the last World Cup in late 2011 and followed that with a dismal Six Nations whitewash, meaning Scottish rugby heads into the New Year battered and bruised.
Hastings, in a noble attempt to try and stay positive, concedes that things could not get much worse, though punters are hardly rushing to use their Betfair bonus on them.
"Scotland is almost at the bottom of the pile and there is only one way to go," he said Hastings who made 61 appearances for Scotland.
"We'll have a new coach for the Six Nations.
"The likelihood is that it will be [attack coach] Scott Johnson and hopefully he can find something with his vast years of experience to lift the players.
"If anyone thinks we're going to get three or four victories next year, then my goodness me, we'll be doing very, very well to do that.
"You just want the players to really start playing for each other and playing for the jersey, doing justice to all the people who have been in the dark blue of Scotland before."
