The Highlanders wear their green jersey for away matches. Is it time to ditch these?
The Highlanders have been playing in their green jerseys for a few seasons now, ditching the maroon Southland colours in order to play their away matches in bright green, is it time to ditch the green?
Some people fans hate the green because it moves away from the provincial colours of the Otago blue and gold, the North Otago gold and the Southland maroon and gold, but Super Rugby is now a franchise competition with teams barely representing the area that they play in. But I would argue, how many Otago players are in the Highlanders anyway? Surely the Southland members of the Highlanders shouldn't have to play in blue and gold all the time, right?
The green is definitely different to any other teams. I find it funny when teams have their away strip being too close to their home strip, like when the All Blacks moved from an all black jersey to a grey and black jersey. Bright green definitely doesn't clash and provides a marketing opportunity to name the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, "The Green House", although this may have other conotations.
The green is practical. There are lots of teams that wear blue. More than half the teams in the competition, what would Highlanders fans think of them playing in green as their first jersey or even maroon as their first option rather than the blue and gold?
The green is bright and some would call it ugly. Other people actually think that the Highlanders don't play very well in green, but it could have something to do with the fact that they wear it more when playing away from home, which is when the Highlanders struggle!
As you can see, there are positives and negatives with any decision. Should the Highlanders wear bright green away jerseys in Super Rugby?
