Find out who made the team of the round and my findings from the weekend.
Round One of the Super Rugby 2011 has come and gone. The rugby failed to live up to the hype surrounding the new competition and I was left disappointed after expecting to see quality rugby in all matches. Are we expecting too much from Round One of the season?
Things to come out of Round One;
The Super Rugby results are extremely difficult to predict.
The Rebels aren't competitive yet, so always pick try scoring players and goal kickers from their opposition. This should also help the other Australian teams as they play them twice.
Local derbies bring out the best in the underdogs, just look at the Blues, Highlanders, Force and Lions.
The New Zealand teams could struggle because as the Highlanders showed, there are no easy teams in their conference.
The season is long and teams like the Chiefs and Hurricanes have outstanding backlines but are too inconsistent.
Watch out for the team with the bye. It is the Force next week.
Team of Round One - Super Rugby 2011
The Waratahs demolition of the Rebels was the catalyst for Berrick Barnes, Drew Mitchell and Kurtley Beale recording some high points. Other goal kickers Matt Giteau, Aaron Cruden (surprisingly) and James O'Connor showed that picking goal kickers helped, although there was a real mixed bag of kicking over the weekend. Keven Mealamu was brilliant at hooker, while Cheetah Philip Van Der Walt made plenty of tackles to secure heaps of points. It seems that tackling is a big factor in accumulating http://www.testrugby.com/ points. There were only 2 players from New Zealand, while there were no South African based backs. You need to buy plenty of these players going forward, with Giteau facing the Rebels next week, while there are some bargain priced loose forwards.
