Six Nations 2015 Round 1 Review – Unconvincing!
The Six Nations 2015 Round 1 was a reminder that these teams are only at the start of their Six Nations campaigns and in all honesty there is much improvement needed by all teams if they are going to threaten the Southern Hemisphere giants at the Rugby World Cup in September and October.
Round 1 is traditionally tricky in most tournaments for teams and fans alike and so any victory, no matter how ugly, will be taken with open arms by England, Ireland and France, no matter how unconvincing.
Injury ravaged England and Ireland picked up precious away wins, but it took both of them until the second half to finally subdue their opponents, while France kicked their way to victory over Scotland whilst wearing their red jerseys.
Those Southern Hemisphere rugby fans can sleep soundly after this first round, but then again there is no point peaking yet with the Rugby World Cup still seven months away.
There was too much aimless kicking in Round 1, with teams reluctant to keep the ball in hand and play the game wide. It may have been the heavy ground conditions, but the attack of the teams involved seemed to struggle, with Ireland's 26 points the most of the weekend. It almost seemed that teams were too afraid to make a mistake, and so put the ball to the boot too often and there were some rather average box kicks from halfbacks.
Stuart Lancaster is probably the most satisfied after an away win over Wales. Given the number of injuries to his team, this was a great result and speaks volumes about the depth of England rugby.
Hopefully teams build momentum for Six Nations Round 2 and beyond and we see some great games. Two of the games were close, even if teams looked sluggish.
No matter what happens, the Northern Hemisphere teams will still be a threat heading towards the Rugby World Cup 2015 in September as the favourable home conditions will make it difficult for the Southern Hemisphere teams.
Finally, isn't it great having some international rugby on again?
