In response to the NZ overseas players team, here is my take on the South African side of players playing abroad:
1. Brian Mujati
2. Schalk Brits (Saracens)
3. Guthro Steenkamp
4. Bakkies Botha
5. Gerhard Mostert
6. Francois Louw
7. Danie Rossouw
8. Joe van Niekerk
9. Fourie du Preez
10. Ruan Pienaar
11. Danie Poolman
12. Brad Barritt
13. Jacques Fourie
14. Tonderai Chavanga
15. Brent Russell
16. Richardt Strauss/Gary Botha
17. Heinke van de Merwe
18. Quinn Roux/Marco Wentzel
19. CJ Stander/Josh Strauss/Pedrie Wannenburg
20. Ernst Joubert
21. Neil de Kock/Rory Kockott
22. Corne Uys
This was done without much research, so feel free to point out any blaring omissions. I'm sure there are a few. I couldn't find anything to say whether or not Brent Russell for instance had retired.
There are 13 Springboks in the run-on team, with Brad Barritt playing for England. There is one Irish international on the bench, along with 5 more Springboks to my knowledge. The forward pack is pretty menacing, and it's an alright backline too!
With other big Springbok names leaving SA to play rugby abroad this year (Andries Bekker, Wynand Olivier, Chilliboy Ralepelle - speculative, Zane Kirchner, Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, JP Pietersen, Jacques Potgieter), this team will be strengthened significantly. The Southern Hemisphere just has too many quality rugby players for our representative sides, and the big money over there will always, sadly, be a huge draw card.
Looking forward to your comments on my selection.
