Should Test Players Play Super Rugby? 7 views

Following a recent spate of injuries which will rob the southern hemisphere teams of top players, should these players actually play Super Rugby at all?
Seeing top level All Blacks like Sam Whitelock, Richard Kahui, Piri
Weepu and Dan Carter being ruled out of the All Blacks June
International test matches against France and hearing that injury in the
latest round of Super Rugby is also going to rob the Wallabies of the
in-form Scott Higginbotham and abrasive lock Sitaleki Timani has left me
thinking that international players shouldn't play much or any Super
Rugby. Super Rugby is ruining international test match rugby with some
of the best players in the world being robbed of the opportunity to play
in tests because of injuries suffered in Super Rugby.
All Blacks centre Conrad Smith is having a break from international
rugby at the end of the year, while All Blacks legend Richie McCaw is
resting from most of Super Rugby, but I think that most international
test players shouldn't even bother playing any or most of the Super
Rugby season so they can stay fresh for international test match rugby.
They are different competitions, but it seems that some international
test rugby stars like Ma'a Nonu, Andrew Hore and Israel Dagg haven't
played their best rugby in Super Rugby 2013, but will probably make the
All Blacks squad to play France.
Until we get a year with approximately 16 weeks off for top players then
we will continue to offer sabbaticals to players like Conrad Smith, but
now that All Blacks utility Ben Smith has also been offered one as part
of his contract, it seems that we will have to offer them to increasing
numbers of players. Otherwise players will continually leave New
Zealand to go overseas and play.
I think it sucks that great players like Scott Higginbotham will miss
the opportunity to play the British and Irish Lions because of injuries
in Super Rugby. It is sad for not only him, but for fans who want to
see the best possible teams take the field. I know injuries are part of
rugby, it seems that Super Rugby is robbing international rugby of the
opportunity to see some great players perform at the highest level.
You have to separate International, Super Rugby and ITM Cup (domestic
rugby) into three different groups of players. This way you would
hopefully avoid player burnout. Whilst it may cause a decrease in the
standard of Super Rugby, you must remember that the input of most
international stars into Super Rugby 2013 has been patchy. In some
cases you would be better seeing younger players developed instead of
seeing a Ma'a Nonu go through the motions.
Do you think international All Blacks, Wallabies and Springboks should play Super Rugby?
