The Highlanders cursed Number 10 jersey looks set to have a new wearer with former All Blacks, Chiefs, Highlanders and Bay of Plenty sharpshooter Mike Delany about to take up the challenge! Scotty Donaldson looks at this situation.
In breaking news, it looks like former All Blacks, Highlanders, Chiefs and Bay of Plenty goalkicking maestro Mike Delany will play for the Highlanders this season after a stint in Japan. The Highlanders have lost both Colin Slade and Lima Sopoaga and there was talk that they have been looking in Japan and around other New Zealand wider training squads for a quality first five eighth and goalkicker. Delany has played for the Highlanders before and while he isn't flashy, he is a good allround kicker and doesn't make many mistakes.
Last night the Highlanders defeated the Rebels to record their fifth win out of six matches, but their current first five Chris Noakes is battling an injury, while makeshift replacement Phil Burleigh showed with a late attempt at goal against the Rebels that he could struggle in the position at this level. Tony Veitch broke the news about Delany in his lunchtime stint. The other options like Trent Renata from the Chiefs wider training squad and former All Black Nick Evans mustn't have been viable options.
For some reason, not only has the All Blacks Number 10 jersey been cursed in recent times, but it seems that both the Highlanders and Reds have had problems there in the Super Rugby 2012 season.
I am excited about Mike Delany joining the Highlanders although I wonder how much it cost to get him out of his contract with Japan. It must be good knowing you are wanted by one of New Zealand's best Super Rugby teams! Things will have changed since Delany was last at the Highlanders! I do think he is more of a short-term option compared with other options like Trent Renata from the Chiefs wider training squad.
