Scotty Donaldson looks at the Super Rugby Round 14 team of the round. Do you agree with the selections based on points?
Super Rugby Round 14 Team of the Round features several try scorers this
week. Julian Savea scored a hattrick of tries against the Rebels,
while Sitaleki Timani, Hosea Gear, Alipate Leiua and Cooper Vuna all
scored doubles, but does this make these players automatic selections in
your www.testrugby.com teams? It is difficult to know if these
players, most of whom sell for well under $1 million will continue to
score heavily assisted by 100 points per try? It is sometimes worth
taking a punt on some of these players given that your team can also get
bonus points for scoring five or more tries. Teams like the Hurricanes
score plenty of tries, but they have a tough run into the playoffs and
it is difficult to know whether Julian Savea can dominate the Crusaders
or Chiefs the way he made mincemeat of the Rebels. At the same time, it
could be worth a punt given that Joe Pieterson and Kurtley Beale who
have been goal kicking outside backs are either injured or not kicking
anymore. You want consistent scoring players who score good points even
if they don't score tries. Nathan Sharpe and Stephen Moore are these
types of players. These guys don't always look like they have had a
massive game, but they do plenty of work behind the scenes and are worth
their high values.
If you told me the Hurricanes would have the
biggest winning margin of the weekend then I would have told you that
you were dreaming. Plenty of their backs got amongst the Team of the
Round, but I think they will struggle to reach such lofty heights again
this season given their draw.
In my view, there are plenty of
bargain priced try scoring backs to allow you to afford the expensive
consistently high scoring forwards.
Round 15 sees the Reds, Cheetahs and Force have the bye, so it may be worth buying cheap Crusaders for reinforcements!
Strangely, only one South African made the Super Rugby Round 14 Team of the Round and
six Australians made it including Stephen Moore. Sometimes it is the
tight games like the Brumbies vs Reds where the tight fowards really
earn their keep, even though it may not be obvious to the casual
observer.
