Do the Combined NSW and Queensland Country team have any chance of beating the British and Irish Lions?
The British and Irish Lions have their easiest match of their tour to
Australia when they play a Combined NSW and Queensland Country team
featuring a combination of fringe Super Rugby players and club players.
For those playing SuperBru, you will be stupid to pick anything other
than a big win for the British and Irish Lions. I am picking the Lions
to win by 56 points, but fear that I could be overestimating the ability
of the home team.
The main talking point is the selection of Scottish outside back Stuart
Hogg to start at first five eighth. He looks likely to handle the
goalkicking duties according Andy Farrell, so that is something for www.testrugby.com
managers. You want to stack your team with British and Irish Lions
players with Stuart Hogg, Jamie Heaslip, Jamie Roberts and George North
my picks for players to watch.
I have also included a few Combined NSW and Queensland Country players
in Brumbies hooker Josh Mann-Rae and Rebels fly-half Angus Roberts who I
am hoping will kick me some points. They have eight Super Rugby players
in their team, although these guys are largely unknown outside of
Australia. These players are cheap and enable you to pretty much choose
whoever else you want.
While this match will provide great experience for the home team, I have
serious reservations about the British and Irish Lions playing a team
made up of amateur and semi-professional players. It is never fun
watching a team get smashed by international stars who are full-time
professionals, but at the same time there is a certain historical
romanticism of having a team of no names cause the upset of the
century.
See my previous article below which looks at whether the British and Irish Lions should only play Super Rugby franchises.

Do you give the Combined NSW and Queensland Country team any chance of beating the British and Irish Lions?
Interestingly the British and Irish Lions played a Combined Country XV in 1966 and won 6-3!
