It will be an interesting finals series for the Top Six of Super Rugby 2011.
The inaugural Super 15 Rugby competition has a new finals format where
the top team from each of the three conferences makes the finals as the
top three and then the next three teams with the highest amounts of
points make the finals.
I did my sums based on a formula where the higher placed team on the
table gets awarded four points. The home team gets a handicap of three
points which could mean if one team is at home but ranked slightly
below the other team, then they would be awarded the win. There is also
a bonus point if the lower ranked team is within seven competition
points. There is also four points for any team with the bye.
There was talk of a minimum of 53 points being required to make the Top Six. I got close to this with my predictions.
Based on this my Top Six finalists at the conclusion of Super Rugby 2011
Conference winners
1. Reds 70
2. Blues 69
3. Sharks 63
4. Crusaders 57
5. Waratahs 57
6. Stormers 56
The Rest
7. Highlanders 52
8. Bulls 41
9. Hurricanes 41
10. Cheetahs 38
11. Chiefs 34
12. Force 34
13. Brumbies 27
14. Rebels 25
15. Lions 19
There would actually be a good mix of teams from different countries.
The only obvious weakness in the competition is that the Australian
Conference is weak with the Force, Brumbies and Rebels likely to finish
near the bottom. There is a weakness of my model, where upsets and form
aren't taken into account. Given the large number of upsets and injured
players in the competition this year, this model helps the top teams
improve their standings, but this may not actually be the case. It would be easier if the bye wasn't worth anything.
Who do you think will make the Super Rugby finals?
