Who are you picking to make the Super Rugby finals?
How many points do you need to make the Super Rugby Top Six finals or win Super Rugby Minor Premiership?
This is the fifth season of Super Rugby with 15 teams. Last year's competition has probably given hope to everyone with the lowest score to make the Top Six (Highlanders, 8 wins and 42 points) and the Minor Premiership (Waratahs, 12 wins and 58 points). With three rounds remaining in 2015, these totals will not be enough this year, with the Hurricanes on 57 points already, while the sixth place Brumbies will need more than 42 points to retain their position.
The other three years to win the Super Rugby minor premiership title required a team to reach 66 points which depending on bonus points comes from between 12 and 14 wins. To make the Top Six in previous years the sixth place team had between 54-57 points from either 10 or 11 wins. Usually 10 wins will be enough to ensure a spot in the Top Six.
It is preferable to finish 4th to get a home first round of playoffs home game, rather than finishing 6th and having to travel to either Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg or Canberra or Sydney, like the Highlanders did last season.
The problem for both the Highlanders and Chiefs is that they play each other this weekend, and while they both probably need only one win and some bonus points to qualify for the Top Six, they both probably need two wins each from their remaining three games to get the valuable 4th spot, plenty will depend on other results.
It is hard to know if it is a good thing if the likely scenario of the Chiefs playing the Highlanders in a knock-out match materialises, but this looks quite likely given that they have five and six points respectively on the chasing pack.
Both the Highlanders and Chiefs have a rather challenging run home, both playing the Hurricanes and an awkward away banana skin in the Blues and Reds, along with playing each other, so even getting one win is no given, but you would expect whoever wins the game between these two teams in Invercargill on Saturday night, has a great chance of finishing fourth.
The real battle is on for the sixth spot, with three South African teams closely poised, while the Brumbies and Waratahs are also involved in a battle.
We think the Brumbies and Waratahs will make the finals and it will be necessary to get around 50 points to make the Top Six, depending on other results, while if a New Zealand team is to finish 4th and get a home game, they will need 54 points as a guarantee.
Who are you picking to make the Super Rugby Top Six finals, here are our picks.
1) Hurricanes
2) Waratahs
3) Stormers
4) Chiefs
5) Highlanders
6) Brumbies
