Super Rugby Round 13 Review – 10 Things We Learnt
Super Rugby Round 13 gave us plenty of insight into Super Rugby 2015, here are 10 Things We Learnt!
1) Home team advantage - in Super Rugby Round 13 every game was won by the home team. The last three rounds have seen the home teams dominate with only two away teams winning, 90 percent of games were won by the home team (18/20). Overall, 51 out of 86 games have been won by the home team in 2015, or 59 percent. This is starting to get closer to the 71 percent total in Super Rugby 2014 and suggests that tipsters should try to pick the home team in almost every game.
2) There will always be an upset - The Force upset the Waratahs to record their second win of the season and see the Waratahs remain in second place in the Australian conference. This result was picked by only five percent of SuperBru tipsters. Most of the other results were predictable, although the Lions vs Highlanders game split the tipsters.
3) The winning margins were erratic in Super Rugby Round 13. The Crusaders and Rebels won by more than expected on Friday night, while the wins for the other four wins of eight points or less, lowered the average winning margin for the round to 13.7 points and the overall average to 11.2 points.
4) The Super Rugby ladder suggests that the Hurricanes are going to be hard to catch this year, although they don't seem to be recording the big wins that they were getting earlier in the season.
5) There is a real dog fight at the top of the South African and Australian conferences, with the Brumbies and Waratahs in a two horse race, while the promising recent form by the Lions has them in the hunt, along with the Stormers and Bulls.
6) There is now real congestion on the Super Rugby ladder, with nine teams battling it out for five spots behind the Crusaders. There are nine teams separated by nine points, eight teams separated by five points and even three teams (Stormers, Bulls and Highlanders) on 34 points.
7) Don't write off the Lions, Crusaders or Rebels. They may be outside the Top Six at the moment, but do not write off the Lions, Crusaders or Rebels. The Lions and Rebels have been success stories this season and are proving to be a handful, while the Crusaders showed in their massive win over the Reds, that you cannot write them off. There are going to be some tough games in the next month.
8) Should Super Rugby referees be neutral? The Highlanders were on the wrong end of some interesting refereeing decisions against the Lions, by referee Craig Joubert, while Sharks and Brumbies fans also had reasons to feel aggrieved over the weekend, leaving you wondering if neutral referees should be implemented.
9) The Lions home advantage - The Lions play at altitude and seem to have a knack of winning games through coming back in the second half. Is this because the team is playing well or does the altitude have a major role? It is also hard to know if other South African teams also struggle with the altitude still, or not?
10) We saw two modern day legends finish their careers in Christchurch. The Crusaders still have a handful of games left, but they won't play any more games in Christchurch. No matter who you support, it won't be the same seeing the Crusaders without Dan Carter and Richie McCaw.
