Who should Taranaki fans support in Super Rugby? Can they simply switch from 18 years of Hurricanes support to now support the Chiefs?
The Chiefs region has been changed to include Taranaki, who have until now been part of the Hurricanes franchise region. I am wondering if the good people of Taranaki are simply going to burn their Hurricanes jerseys which they have owned from 1996, and buy a new Chiefs top? Sure, they are good looking shirts and Super Rugby is franchise based rather than being tribal like the ITM Cup, but surely people aren't as fickle as simply switching allegiances after 18 years.
A similar thing happened in the past when the Chiefs region included North Harbour and Northland in their early days, while Counties was included in the Blues. These days, both the Chiefs and Hurricanes regions cover large geographical areas, although with the way that players can these days be signed for Super Rugby without switching their ITM Cup allegiances, then this isn't as important as it was in the past.
Taranaki fans may feel that too often Taranaki players missed selection in the Hurricanes at the expense of Wellington based players. Other teams like Manawatu and Hawkes Bay would probably agree with that.
I want to know, are Taranaki fans now Chiefs fans or are they loyal to the Hurricanes?
