With Argentina entering the Rugby Championship, we should see them rise up the ranks in the coming years, eventually becoming a consistent threat to the big guns of world rugby.
I've just had a quick look at the current world rankings, it's the usual picture with New Zealand, Australia and South Africa sitting in the top 3 places, Argentina is languishing way back in 8th spot.
1. New Zealand 91.43
2. Australia 87.05
3. South Africa 84.87
4. England 83.09
5. France 83.03
6. Wales 82.26
7. Ireland 79.85
8. Argentina 79.25
9. Scotland 77.97
10. Samoa 76.23
11. Italy 76.03
12. Tonga 74.79
13. Canada 72.30
14. Fiji 70.60
15. Georgia 67.95
16. Japan 67.93
17. USA 66.61
18. Romania 64.54
19. Russia 62.05
20. Spain 61.63
As we speak Argentina have mustered their squad together and are preparing for the Rugby Championship, by all accounts they are endeavoring to 'tweak' their playing style to 'fit in' with the way that NZ, SA and Aus play. They are fully aware of the up-tempo pace that is required to win at this level, a dreary bash-em-up style will not cut it?
It won't be easy for them, they'll need to adjust to the travel factor, with 4 teams, there'll be plenty of away games and you'll need to win a handful of these to be in with a chance. You also need a very deep bench, they have some very experienced players to call on but if they're smart they'll be developing the next level below to bolster their ranks.
After a few tough initial seasons, they will completely reverse their situation.. they will still have a great set of forwards, but with pacey backs and a mindset to score and attack.
Lookout world!!
