Hot off the entrails of possibly the best match of the tournament to date, Samoa get to pack their bags and go home (probably a quick drive to a suburb in Auckland, but that is home all the same to the biggest pacific island city in the world!)
Samoa deserved so much more. They dominated most of the game, but as ever the underdogs get the rough end of the ref's whistle at key moments. Who cares about a few calls in the middle of the park. What could it have been if......
- In the first half, hot on attack and under the posts, was it really a Samoan hand in the ruck, or was it twenty South African hands all over the ball stopping it from coming out?
- End of the first half, Samoa running riot up the right flank, ref in the way, stops play and calls it half-time... could that have converted into something?
- Second half, Lemi rips SA apart up the middle, Lamb takes him to ground but let's go - but not according to the ref!
If one of these 3 movements converted into points for Samoa instead of a penalty against, the night may well have been different. It could have been a huge upset and a massive year for the boys in blue with a second major international scalp under their belt.
Instead it wasn't and the predictable outcome prevailed.
It was however a genuine test match, and game that the pacific lads can be hugely proud of. The South Africans certainly know they went to battle, and while sore for a few days will in the end be much the better off leading into a grueling finals series.
This is what the RWC is all about. - loving every minute of it.
I hope the pacific colours still shine through the remainder of the tournament, and bring the fervour and fun that has been so pervasive this far.
