The Singapore based Asia Pacific Dragons are the frontrunners to become the 18th team in Super Rugby 2016. Thoughts?
Singapore has been confirmed as the frontrunner for the Super 18 rugby competition in 2016, ahead of Japan. South Africa prefers Singapore because there are no direct flights to Japan and playing in Singapore would reduce the travelling time to 11 hours rather than up to 23 hours to Japan.
The team would be called the Asia Pacific Dragons and would be coached by former All Black Tana Umaga. It would mainly be made up of Pacific Island players. This is in some ways crazy given that Singapore doesn't really have any past in the game of rugby and it would be interesting to see if the locals would show up to watch a mainly Pacific Island team play their games there and if there would be much fan loyalty. They wouldn't include any local players, but would get bigger crowds than the Pacific Island nations would which is the main reason for not having a Pacific Islands based team.
It seems funny having a team based in Singapore, simply to please South African management, but they do hold the power in Super Rugby, even if they don't have the quality of teams to back it up. The Asia Pacific Dragons would be in a four team South African conference.
Hopefully this team does better than the Australian National Basketball League team, the Singapore Slingers.
Do you think that there should be a Singapore or Japanese based team in Super Rugby 2016?
