Scotty Donaldson looks at the British and Irish Lions vs Waratahs match. Here are the team lists too. Do the Waratahs have any chance?
The British and Irish Lions have named a near test strength side which
will surely secure an easy win over a New South Wales Waratahs team
missing 11 international players on Saturday night. It will be a long
night at the office for the Waratahs who only have four international
players in their team. These teams first met 125 years ago and the
Waratahs haven't won since 1959.
For those playing www.testrugby.com
this should be another British and Irish Lions benefit and so I have
only left a few spots for Waratahs players in order to fit under the
salary cap.
Leigh Halfpenny and Sean Maitland are compulsory outside backs, although
it will be interesting to see how Simon Zebo goes in his debut. Jamie
Heaslip is another good buy, while the main decision is which Waratahs
players to go for in order to fit under the salary cap?
I am going for Waratahs hooker John Ulugia, massive young lock Will
Skelton and loose forward Pat McCutcheon, although Lions prop Mako
Vunipola could be an alternative front row purchase given he averages
over 200 points per game. Ironically the Waratahs backline has more
first team regulars like Peter Betham, Brendan McKibbin and Bernard
Foley, but I think their forwards will struggle to gain enough ball to
give them many opportunities.
Watch out for players who may get benched as early as half time. The
Lions could find themselves up by plenty against this understrength
Waratahs team and they could bench some players which may prevent
managers getting the most out of their players.
Since plenty of the Waratahs forwards have hardly played any Super
Rugby, it is hard to get a gauge on their points production. As a guide
you can use the Super Rugby version of www.testrugby.com Force vs Waratahs game since most of the side named to face the Lions, also played against the Force.
For SuperBru tipsters I am picking this nearly full strength British and Irish Lions team to win convincingly by 35 points.
Do the Waratahs have any chance against the British and Irish Lions?
Have your say!
