Pressure is mounting on Australia coach Robbie Deans following back-to-back defeats against New Zealand, and several prominent rugby journalists already believe he has out-stayed his welcome.
Pressure is mounting on Australia coach Robbie Deans following back-to-back defeats against New Zealand, and several prominent rugby journalists already believe he has out-stayed his welcome.
The 22-0 defeat to All Blacks at the weekend has left a sour taste in the mouth of several writers, and not to mention the fans, who have seen their beloved Wallabies endure 14 defeats in the last 17 clashes between the two teams.
Deans’ only hope of saving his job is if he can guide the team to success, or at least one
or two morale-restoring performances in the rugby union championship.
Next up for Australia is South Africa, who are keen to overcome some disappointment of their own after falling to a surprise draw with Argentina.
Deans probably doesn’t need to lead his side to the Rugby Championship title, but he does need to offer supporters hope that brighter days are ahead.
For the last five years, New Zealand have dominated the international game and that fact will sit heavy on the shoulders of their Gold and Green neighbours.
If Deans can lead the team to improved performances in the coming weeks then it will help to relieve some of the pressure on him, although there are some observers who believe the 52-year-old Cheviot native is already on borrowed time.
"Deans is rapidly running out of time after latest Kiwi debacle," was the verdict delivered
by the Sydney Morning Herald.
But the man himself is bullish about his prospects for the immediate future.
“We haven’t achieved what we wanted to achieve in recent months, but the future is still bright. I firmly believe that. The pressure is mounting on the whole squad, but we’re equipped to deal with that.”
Australia return to championship rugby action on September 8, when they welcome South Africa to Perth.
