Defence is the key to winning matches in the Rugby Championship 2012. Argentina almost beat South Africa in Round 2 action while the All Blacks kept the Wallabies scoreless. Who are you picking to win the Rugby Championship 2012 and who will finish last?
Defence was the winner in the Rugby Championship 2012 Round 2 where the All Blacks defeated the Wallabies 22-0 and there was a sixteen all draw between Argentina and South Africa.
South Africa had to rely on a late comeback just to get a draw and deny Argentina and upset first win in the competition. Argentina will be tough to beat at home, with most people picking the Wallabies to be their first victims in the competition.
The All Blacks strangled the Wallabies to keep them to their first clean sheet against the All Blacks since 1962 at Carisbrook where the All Blacks won 3-0.
The All Blacks have improved their defence, but it has been to the detriment of their usually lethal attacking ability which saw them only score one try despite dominating territory and possession. The Wallabies to their credit did scramble well in defence. I don't want to sound disappointed in a 22 point victory for the All Blacks but it would have been more satisfying if they scored some more tries.
Argentina have proved their critics wrong already with their display against the Springboks. They took a physical game to the usually physical Springboks and if it weren't for a charge down try, they would have won. They still need to work on scoring tries as while their forward pack is as hard as nails, their backs don't quite have the ability to get over the tryline.
It is great having four teams who have such different styles and strengths to their game. It will be interesting to see if Australia can cope with the physical Springboks and Argentina now. Argentina and Australia will now battle for the wooden spoon.
The All Blacks look like hot favourites to win the Rugby Championship 2012 with their away matches in South Africa and Argentina the only challenges ahead. The All Blacks will be unbeatable at home.
Defence is ruling the roost with no four try bonus points being scored yet in the Rugby Championship 2012. This is funny given how we are so used to seeing plenty of tries during the Super Rugby competition. This is test match rugby and you have to work for your tries!
