Hire Experts For Concrete Cutting Making The Best
Concrete Driveways Adelaide is often recommended because of their low servicing. While road needs maintenance over several decades, concrete, once set up and enclosed, needs very little care. However, the concrete costs more than the road to set up, so you do pay a price for the time you will save.

Should Super Rugby and All Blacks Play ITM Cup? 2 views 2 Comments
10 April 2013 by The Swede Eaters

Should the Super Rugby and All Blacks play ITM Cup or should it be completely amateur?

Hawkes Bay Hika Elliot is a victim of professional in rugby with the Magpies unable to afford to contract the three test All Black and Chiefs regular for their ITM Cup 2013 campaign. Money is tight for most ITM Cup teams with most teams well under the salary cap in order to avoid the large financial debt which saw both Otago and Southland struggle with bankruptcy.

With the extended All Blacks and Super Rugby calendar, by the time Elliot would turn out for Hawkes Bay he would be lucky to play three or four games in the ITM Cup.

In recent times I remember the Stags laden Highlanders and their players like Josh Bekhuis, Jason Rutledge, Jamie Mackintosh and John Hardie would toil for most weeks in Super Rugby and then by the time it was over they were stuffed and would need to rest for most of the early rounds of the ITM Cup. They would also not be playing their best footy. Super Rugby training starts in December or January and the competition finishes in August. That is a long season!

The All Blacks play domestic tests during the Super Rugby season window and then play in the Rugby Championship which goes from mid August until early October, leaving All Blacks virtually no chance to play ITM Cup for their province or if they do, it could cause more disruption than it is worth for a few games at the end, depending on if their team makes the finals.

Many ITM Cup unions can't afford to contract All Blacks or high level Super Rugby players as they don't have much money. Often All Blacks only get the opportunity to play a few ITM Cup matches and can cause more disruption than anything. Sometimes teams are better off with talent that has been training with the squad for the entire ITM Cup. All Blacks and Super Rugby players often struggle with fatigue when playing in the ITM Cup.

Should Super Rugby players and All Blacks be allowed in the ITM Cup? Or should the ITM Cup become completely amateur?

I too would be interested in knowing exactly how the curry cup functions.

I understand that the max salary for an ITM cup player is set at $65,000.00 a season. The NZRU can compensate for players away on international duty up to the tune of $35,000 per season. What I don't understand is why the unions don't simply offer the top tier players (I.e, Super rugby players with a high workload, All Blacks) contracts based on games played. Give them a base contract of 1k per season, and a match bonus of approx $5,518.00. This means if they play every game (including semi and final) their total salary will be the $65,000 max.

What do you think?

The ITM Cup (NPC) is not the competition it used to be, nor will it ever regain the premier status it once held.

The first nail in it's coffin was the invention of Super Rugby, and second has been the gradual but steady expansion of the International calendar. The lure of the Euro, Pound and the Japanese Yen hasn't helped the cause either.

The NPC used to feature all the cream of NZ's talent, and it provided some epic regional rivalry. It was this cauldron where the national selectors would do most of their figuring as to who would earn AB status, and it's quality was second only to Test matches. Leading provinces were so good they'd always put fear up the spine of any touring national side.

Now the NPC, packaged as the ITM Cup, has a feel of 'second division' about it. Still providing some mighty rivalries but always lacking without the very best players consistently in the mix, and with players spread over a high number of teams in the comp.

This is a feeder for Super Rugby, and Super Rugby is clearly where player earn their rep for national selection.

So in answer to your question... I'll never knock having the best players joining in at any level in any sport, and in fact encourage it. It adds spice for players and spectators alike.

BUT it must be that they also drop their own expectations to match the situation. Set the Salary Cap at a level which is sustainable for the competition, and attract whatever players you can with it. If some slip by the way, then so be it. If some can only play a few games, then pay them less and make them a 'Super Sub' instead of a 'Super Star'.

What is the situation with the Curry Cup? Are there any parallels with the NZ experience?
