There's been eye-opening talk around the wealth of ex-pat players spread around the globe. With the recent appointment of Vern Cotter as Scotland's head coach it's made me wonder about coaching stocks....
Being a Kiwi, I'll keep this primarily to New Zealand coaches.
With just a light bit of research to boost what I already knew, just as it was with the players, I found an amazing exodus of talent. Maybe NZ Coaching is on pathway of world domination... watch out South Africa, I think you're next on the hit list!
Hollow words you might say, but just consider the following list of the top 15 ranked countries in the world... and we see that 6 of these national teams are currently being directed by New Zealanders:

Other names that come to hand include the following.
- Warren Gatland - British and Irish Lions
- Rob Penney - Munster
- Mark Anscombe - Ulster
- Matt Sexton - Kings
- John Plumtree - Sharks
- John Mitchell - Technical advisor to Golden Lions
- Carlos Spencer - Short term assistant with the Sharks
As far as I'm aware, all major New Zealand teams are still being coached by Kiwis.
We can't really think about getting them all back to lace their boots and take the field in some kind of face-off, so apart from a little nationalistic head-swell I'm not really sure what this means.
Certainly Kiwi coaches are riding the success of the All Blacks brand.
The question is whether they really do offer something greater than local talent can muster. At a national level I'd be downright embarrassed if we employed a coach from another country (a bit like many Aussies are, I believe, he he). It's a different story where your side is clearly below the very top tier as in that case it's all about learning from the best.
What is the spread of coaches from other countries, and what are the thoughts about bringing in outside talent?
Meantime, Scotland - you've picked up a winner in Vern Cotter.
