Scott Donaldson looks at a New Zealand survey which suggests who New Zealanders would least like to see win if the All Blacks don't?
You would have noticed the huge support that Ireland received during their win over Australia. That is because New Zealanders love nothing more than seeing someone beating their big brothers from across the ditch. The funny thing is that when given the option of another team winning the Rugby World Cup apart from the New Zealand All Blacks most people would probably rather see the Wallabies win the Rugby World Cup than South Africa or England. I think Quade Cooper has helped fuel the fire of hatred, but while we can't stand the Australian cricket team, I don't mind the Wallabies. They play an attractive style of rugby and even have a New Zealand coach so surely they can't be that bad? But according to a New Zealand Herald survey, about a third of people want Australia to win the Rugby World Cup 2011 out of any nation. South Africa polled 19%, England polled 9%, while France polled 7%.
I think Quade Cooper has a lot to answer for, because his recent antics and underhand tactics relating to Richie McCaw have seen him become public enemy number one in New Zealand. It then makes sense why there was so much support for Ireland on Saturday night. It is a shame, because I think Australia play a great style which is easy to watch, but it seems that one bad egg can spoil it for the rest. About a year ago I would suggest that most people wouldn't have minded the Wallabies winning, but obviously things have changed according to the survey.
