As a manager it is important to get plenty of minutes out of your players. Here is a look at Super Rugby's most durable players.
Super Rugby is a battle of attrition with the season going from February to August. The most durable player over the last three Super Rugby championships has been Chiefs hard man Liam Messam who has logged nearly 4000 minutes. Is it a coincidence that the Chiefs have won the last two Super Rugby titles?
Interestingly, there are some key performers from other teams towards the top of the list. Usually having consistent selections is a good thing for a team. George Whitelock has helped the Crusaders to be a solid performing team, while Morne Steyn's absence could really affect the Bulls in 2014!
Whitelock's minutes won't be helped in 2014 with Richie McCaw starting Super Rugby 2014, while other All Blacks like Kieran Read, Luke Whitelock and Matt Todd are also in the squad.
Will Genia and Quade Cooper logged big minutes in Super Rugby 2011 and this had a major impact on them winning the Super Rugby 2011 title.
Sometimes it is actually a blessing to have less depth than more depth as often top level international players and teams with great depth rest and rotate their teams often.
That is why it is usually better value for money to select players like Liam Messam for fantasy rugby games like www.testrugby.com who are either from the lesser teams or teams who don't rest and rotate their players. Adam Thomson and Ben Smith have been like this for the Highlanders in recent seasons.
Is Liam Messam the most durable player in Super Rugby 2014? Who do you think is a buy now player for your fantasy rugby team?
