Matt Giteau has retired from international rugby following the news that he is to be left out of the Wallabies Rugby World Cup squad.
Matt Giteau will be the shock omission from the Wallabies Rugby World Cup 2011 squad when it is named tomorrow. The veteran who has always promised so much hinted strongly on Twitter that his days were numbered. I still think that Matt Giteau was the ultimate foil for powerhouse centre Stirling Mortlock, but I never rated his goalkicking and think he should never have been the main goalkicker for the Wallabies.
The 92 cap Wallaby has called time on his career with Australia after not being selected in the 30-man squad to play in the Rugby World Cup 2011 starting next month. Part of the national set-up since 2002, Giteau scored 29 tries playing for the Wallabies, racking up 684 points in total as he often was the team’s kicker. One of the best utility players ever seen, he started at scrum-half, fly-half and at centre for the national team.
The Wallabies have some great young backs these days including Pat McCabe, Kurtley Beale, Quade Cooper and James O'Connor, but I think there is only space for either Berrick Barnes or Matt Giteau, but not both in the Wallabies. You never know though, there will be injuries and he would be the next cab off the rank. He has been a great points scorer for testrugby managers over the years!
