Scotty Donaldson compares the predictable nature of the Rugby World Cup with the FIFA World Cup.
Is the Rugby World Cup 2011 too predictable? There are only five teams with a genuine chance to win the tournament this year with Australia twice, South Africa twice, England and New Zealand the only four teams to win the Rugby World Cup. Add France to the mix and there are only a handful of teams capable of winning. These five teams have made the Quarter Finals at every tournament so far. Does this take away from the spectacle? Lets look at the Rugby World Cup and compare it to the FIFA World Cup which appears to have greater depth than the oval ball game.
Rugby World Cup
There have only been four winners with Australia, South Africa, England and New Zealand lifting the William Webb Ellis cup.
There are 20 teams in the tournament and there have been six tournaments since 1987.
There are 93 teams on the IRB World Rankings list.
Only 12 teams have ever made it to the knock-out stages. Obviously the four winning teams above, France, Argentina, Scotland, Fiji, Samoa, Ireland, Wales and Canada.
Australia, England, France, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa are the only teams to make the knock-out stages at every tournament they have played in.
FIFA World Cup
This tournament sees 32 teams battle it out.
There are 207 teams on the FIFA World Rankings list.
The following teams have won Uruguay, Italy, Spain, Brazil, West Germany, Argentina, England and France (8 teams).
There have been 19 FIFA World Cups from 1930 to 2010.
The following countries have made the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup over the last 80 years. The eight winning countries and USA, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Chile, Portugal, Soviet Union, Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia. Turkey and South Korea. I haven't included Germany in my count. So in total that is 24 teams have made the FIFA World Cup semi finals.
Some other points to note.
You would never get a bottom ranked team actually getting good results in pool play at the Rugby World Cup like New Zealand did in the 2011 FIFA World Cup by drawing with the defending champions or an outsider like Australia making the knock-out phases like they did in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
You would never get the defending champions not making it past pool play at the Rugby World Cup like France did in 2002.
These prove that there is far more depth in the FIFA World Cup.
In my opinion I think that picking the winner of the Rugby World Cup is just as easy as picking the winner of the FIFA World Cup, but more teams have a realistic chance at making the knock-out phases of the FIFA World Cup. There are more teams in the FIFA World Cup and you therefore you get a greater range of teams making it into the sudden death matches.
