Scotty Donaldson reviews Super Rugby Round 13 2013. There were close margins and a couple of results based on the bounce back theory. Which team impressed you over the weekend?
Super Rugby Round 13 was a difficult one for tipsters. There were two results which weren't picked by many SuperBru tipsters, with the Hurricanes and the Southern Kings victories only picked by a minority of punters, but weren't massive shocks when you consider the relative positions of the teams involved on the table. Both the Hurricanes and the Southern Kings were thrashed in Round 12 and so it is interesting to see the bounce back theory return (I foolishly doubted the calibre of players in these two teams to bounce back)! Only 9 percent of punters on SuperBru picked the Hurricanes to win, although this could also be in part to the loyalty of Cheetahs fans who play the South African based game. The Hurricanes were the only team to win away in Super Rugby Round 13
Not many tipsters would have picked the Reds vs Sharks game to be the most one sided with the 15 point winning margin to the Reds being the biggest victory of the weekend. The two Australian battlers, the Force and Rebels performed admirably away from home with narrow defeats to the better ranked Chiefs and Blues respectively. Five of the six matches resulted in bonus points for the losing teams being within seven points. This weekend will go down as one of the most even of the weekend.
In the Super Rugby Tips SuperBru tipping competition, most people picked the Chiefs, Blues, Reds and Waratahs victories, but there was still plenty of ground to be made by getting the low margins as most people went high, especially in the Chiefs and Blues victories. Hadchurch won the golden cap for tipster of Round 13, while Shaka holds a narrow lead at the top of the table ahead of the chasing pack of johan, Chanti-Belle and ROYEE.
I was impressed by the Lions tour inspired Australian teams who punched above their weight in Super Rugby Round 13. The Reds win was the biggest of the weekend against a useful Sharks side, while the Waratahs got an important win over the Stormers after returning from South Africa. The two easybeats the Rebels and Force were gutsy losers in New Zealand.
The New Zealand teams gained three wins over the weekend with the Hurricanes victory being a clear favourite. The Chiefs and Blues got the points, but were far from convincing. The poor old Highlanders lost to the fired up Southern Kings.
The Luke Watson inspired Southern Kings victory over the Highlanders was a highlight for the South African teams. The Cheetahs, Sharks and Stormers all lost, making it one of the less memorable weekend for teams from the republic.
